Seed Quality and Testing

Why settle for seed that’s just “good enough”?

Your biggest risk for loss each season shouldn’t start inside the bag. Seed quality is one of the critical foundations for uniform emergence, vigorous plant stands and more full ears at harvest.

While some seed brands do the minimum (warm germination test) to measure seed quality before it goes into the bag, AgVenture is committed to going beyond standard seed quality testing, conducting multiple tests both internally and externally.

Why go beyond standard quality testing?

It’s simple, no single test can predict how a lot of seed will correlate to field emergence and toleration of stressful environments.

Field conditions vary greatly from acre to acre and year to year. Differences in moisture levels, temperatures and soil composition all have an impact on strong emergence. Oftentimes, corn seed must tolerate stressful environments during germination and emergence, which means genetic vigor and seed quality are both critical for a successful crop.

The vigor of a seed lot refers to its ability to produce seedlings under diverse conditions.

High Vigor: strong seed will germinate, emerge and grow well
Low Vigor: weaker seed will not germinate or will have a slower germination and growth in response to the stress

Rigorous Testing Reduces Loss in Field

To determine a truer viability and vigor of each seed lot, AgVenture brand seed is tested in multiple categories by AgVenture and independent seed companies (ISCs). We believe that seed quality should include the best warm AND cold germination scores along with low abnormal counts.

Through multiple tests below we test on three seed quality components:

  • chilling injury risk
  • strength when attacked by soil-borne pathogens
  • success under limited oxygen availability

A key measurement of each lot is the number of normal seedlings, abnormal seedlings and dead seed to better predict field emergence and lower the risk of loss at planting. AgVenture testing has focused on the abnormal results over the years, digging deeper to reduce abnormal and increase normal seedlings in each lot.
