Farm Data That Makes A Difference

Using Precision Data to Raise Yields

Every year, we track data on our fields and soil types, looking at factors like population, fertilizer and nitrogen applications. In the winter when we do our planning, we look at the results from the previous season and compile them with data from past years. I sit down with the AgVenture team and look at the issues we know affected us.

Details Matter on Heath Hill's Farm in Iowa

Heath Hill farms 750 acres on the Southeast corner of Hamilton County in Iowa. We met up with him to hear how he and his AgVenture Yield Specialist are focusing on the details to increase yield across his operation. Watch the video to hear his story.

Starter Fertilizer Role in Increasing Corn Yield

From AgVenture's Seeds for Success Agronomy Update, February 2016

Starter fertilizers can provide essential nutrients to young corn plants during early season growth periods. While it is difficult to predict exactly if yield response will occur, under some conditions, starter fertilizers can greatly improve the potential for yield response. According to University of Illinois research, starter fertilizers provided benefits:

Wrapping up Harvest in Illinois

I’m doing in-line ripping today. We got done with harvest a week ago this morning, and all in all it went very well. Personally, I was still slightly disappointed, but that’s just how I am. I was told to be very happy with what I have, because my corn was probably 30 bushels better than all my neighbors, and my beans were probably about eight. So overall, I’m pleased with the results.

Harvest Underway in the Delta

We’ve been harvesting for two weeks now, and we’ve just finished all our dryland acres. It turned out okay; we saw 160 on some fields and around 130, 140 on others, which is okay. We’ve definitely done better, but we’ve also done a lot worse. I think it was more a compaction issue than anything. The field we harvested is our heaviest dirt; it’s a clay soil.

Growing a Grain and Cow Operation Side by Side

Harvest this year seems to drag on and on and on. But in defense of the harvest, being late with our corn crops has a lot to do with it. With being hailed out and having so much replant, it made a big delay in the operation. I think we did rather well for having to replant. We ended up with anywhere from a 40–50 bushel up to 180. It was just all over the board, but I’m pleased.
