Applications for the Earl H. Passwaters Agricultural Scholarship Now Open

Agricultural education is crucial to meeting the demands of feeding the world, and one man, Earl Passwaters, understood that. He played a vital role in supporting young farmers and enabling them to become valuable members of the agricultural community.

The Earl H. Passwaters Agricultural Scholarship is now accepting applicants for 2014. If you know a deserving student looking to return to the farm after college, please encourage them to apply for this $1,000 endowed scholarship.

Earl H. Passwaters

Earl Passwaters enjoyed a successful, 26-year career as a salesman for Pioneer. He began as a family farmer in Delaware and had a passion for his family, agriculture and supporting young farmers. When Earl settled in to retirement, he discovered AgVenture and made the decision to form his own Regional Seed Company (RSC), East Coast Seed.

Through the customer-focused AgVenture approach, Earl found something he’d always been missing in his work: the ability to develop meaningful relationships with his clients. During this time, Earl worked with his clients’ children, as they were coming home to the family farm. Earl enjoyed connecting with them through his love of technology.

Earl passed away suddenly in 2011, but his belief in the value of education, and its role in staying on top of technology in agriculture, lives on through the Earl H. Passwaters Scholarship.

About the Scholarship

In 2013, the first annual Earl H. Passwaters Scholarship was awarded to Clayton Robison, an animal science student from Winfield, Iowa. The scholarship is founded on the continuation of Earl’s philosophy of “paying it forward,” and benefits one student pursuing an agricultural degree who has plans to live on a working farm. Applicants must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, demonstrate community involvement and submit an essay about why they chose a career in agriculture and the benefits of having a degree in the agriculture field.

Interested applicants may contact their AgVenture Regional Seed Company or the Newton County Community Foundation in Rensselaer, Indiana for more information. This year’s application deadline is March 14, 2014.
