We spent the day with with one of our growers digging several root pits to see how root systems were doing with the very dry weather in SD. Very interesting what we found... Overall we found very good moisture at 24 to 30 inch depth. The issue was tight soils along with higher magnesium levels really caused issues. As you can see in this picture, soils were very compacted making it difficult for roots to penetrate.
AgVenture Scherr's Seed team evaluating root systems below ground as well as the effects of different effects of tillage and soil amendments like ag lime on overall soil structure.
