To Till or Not To Till
Managing heavy corn residue can be challenging, but Iowa State University says tillage is not always the most effective or profitable solution. Consider planter modifications and residue cleaners at planting time. Heavier down-pressure springs and other equipment may be more effective considering the economic and environmental costs. Accelerated nutrient loss and soil erosion may result from conventional fall tillage. Tillage in extremely dry conditions may further dry soils and amplify erosion.
