Regional Seed Company Spotlight: Mayberry Seed Co.
Mayberry Seed Co. has been serving growers in southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois for 47 years. We caught up with Matt Mayberry to learn more about what makes their operation unique.
How did Mayberry Seed Co. get its start?
My father, Larry Mayberry, started Mayberry Seed in 1971. In the late 1990s, he discovered AgVenture and talked with the general manager. He liked the AgVenture model and he understood that you have to dedicate yourself to the brand. My father signed up on the spot, turning Mayberry Seed Co. into an AgVenture Regional Seed Company (RSC) in 2000.
Growing up I helped out on the farm and in the business by loading out product and making deliveries. I spent 5 years after college working for Farm Credit Services as a loan officer. It was a good experience, but I was ready to come back home to the family business where I’ve now been for 10 years. It’s gone fast. We’ve seen a lot of changes, but it’s exciting and great to be a part of it.
What makes your Regional Seed Company different?
We love the freedom of working with AgVenture. We make all the decisions as far as what products to offer. We’re not just selling what someone else tells us to sell. We put our production plan together based on decisions specifically suited for our region. And we focus on seed quality, which is above and beyond any of the competition.
We’re also really pleased with the seed treatments we’re utilizing. It’s great with a complete mix of fungicides, insecticides and biologicals that help us get good stand establishment.
We stand behind our growers from start to finish, all year long, unlike seed companies that just sell you a bag of seed and leave.
Growers like having us there year-round and being a sounding board for them. This goes along with our customer service, which
to me, is hands-down above and beyond anybody else. That’s what we specialize in, and our response time is immediate.
What are you focusing on with growers this season?
Whatever the market’s demanding, you want to cater to it. We have four new corn hybrids and several new competitive soybean products this year that we’re very excited about. We’ll be working with our growers on their cropping plans this winter and selecting the right hybrids for their fields.
What do you like most about being part of AgVenture?
I’ve been around the AgVenture network since my father joined, so I’ve gotten to know a lot of the owners across the country. It’s been really exciting to get to know everyone, and it’s a family network where we can talk to each other and share ideas. Even though we’re independent, we like to have feedback on what everyone else is doing. At the end of the day, we serve our growers better because of the AgVenture network support.
"Our mission as a seed company is to provide growers in our local area with superior performing genetics, combined with the highest quality of seed and above-and-beyond customer service."
