Forage Stand Health Assessment
Once alfalfa plants have 3-4 inches of new growth, stand health may be assessed by randomly selecting sites throughout the field. You want to see a minimum of 4-5 alfalfa plants per foot.
Other factors that influence alfalfa health include variety selection. Choose varieties with good winter hardiness and disease resistance. Soil fertility, specifically potassium levels, are associated with enhancing tolerance to winter injury. Improved soil drainage helps prevent ice-sheeting and heaving.
