Fertilizer Use

Fertilizer sales three times more than crop protection sales

According to the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), total annual fertilizer sales including nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, secondary nutrients, and micronutrient total $180 billion. That’s three times more than crop protection sales, three times more than seed sales and more than twice the size of ag machinery sales.

IFA reports that average uptake of fertilizers by crops is 50 percent and while some of that remainder is available for subsequent years, significant portions are not. As the industry works to build nutrient use efficiency, IFA expects that transformational change is coming not from the total fertilizer products used, but in how the products are used.
